Helicopters used in marine rescue
5/3/2003 15:04
The Shanghai Marine Salvage Center successfully saved three fishermen
in only two hours by using helicopters for the first time two days
ago.
The center received an emergency call at 12:30 in the afternoon on
March 3, saying a fishing boat with three crew members was caught in a storm
near Chongming Island and was likely to capsize at any moment.
The center
sent a rescue team immediately. Small boats could not be used due to high winds
and the water was too shallow for larger vessels, so the center dispatched
helicopters.
The center asked for support from the Shanghai branch of the
CITIC Offshore Helicopter Co., Ltd. (COHC) at 13:50.
At 15:35, an A-109E
helicopter took off, locating the three fishermen at 16:01. Rescuers used a
lifesaving belt to pull the fishermen to safety.
