Highway use up sharply
13/3/2003 15:04

Shanghai has seen a sharp increase in the number of users on trans-provincial highways in the past four consecutive years, local road transportation officials said.

The highways served more than 20 million passengers last year, 36 percent more than a year earlier.

Increases in 2001, 2000 and 1999 were 33.7 percent, 17.6 percent and 18.7 percent respectively.

The percentage of commuters using highways as their means of transportation has increased from 9.6 percent in 1995 to 27.5 percent last year.

The city will further improve service quality in the sector accordingly, officials said. It plans to bring local highways up to international standards in three to five years, they said.

The city has also started to renovate local long-distance bus centers, streamlining ticket purchasing and making transportation information easier to access.

New express long-distance routes will increase by 10 percent annually while some old ones will be removed or renovated to help increase convenience.
