Subway line 4 to be complete by year's-end
14/3/2003 15:05

Shanghai's subway line 4 will be complete by year's-end, and trail operation will start next year, the Shanghai Metro Construction Corporation said yesterday.

The line is basically a subway line completing the south-eastern segment of the Pearl Line loop. Passengers on line 4 will be able to transfer conveniently to the elevated-rail line, now forming the north-western segment of the loop, and the No.1 and No.2 subway lines, forming a cross in the center of the loop, officials with the construction corporation said.

The line will run for 22 kilometers, from Baoshan Road in Hongkou District in northeast Shanghai, down across the Huangpu River to Century Avenue near Lu Jiazui in Pudong, where it will link to subway line 2 (green line). It will then cross back to Puxi near the Nanpu Bridge, and extend southwest to connect with the southern end of the elevated-rail line near the South Shanghai Railway station, where it will link to subway line 1 (red line).

According to the construction plan, there will be 19 stations along the line, 17 of them underground, with an average distance between stations of 1.24 kilometers. Trains will run at 4-minute intervals during trial operation next year. Twenty-eight trains will run on the line when it starts full operation in 2006.
