City busy with urban construction
10/4/2003 15:05

A total of 18 urban construction projects are underway throughout the city, says the Shanghai Engineering Administrative Bureau.

The Lupu Bridge and Outer-Ring Road Tunnel, currently under construction, will be open to traffic by the end of June, the bureau announced yesterday.

They also said that the Dalian Road Tunnel, currently under construction, will open by the end of September. This means that, by year's end, there will be nine connections across the Huangpu River from downtown to Pudong, up from six currently.

Construction of a 39-kilometer highway connecting the area near Tongji University in the northeast and Anting in the northwest is underway. The highway, forming the north part of a 200-kilometer suburban ring linking counties surrounding Shanghai, will open to traffic at the end of 2004.

Work on the middle ring road between the existing inner and outer ring roads started early this month in the northeast Wujiaochang area, and will be in full swing next year. The Puxi section of the middle ring road will be complete in 2005 and the Pudong section will be finished in 2007, when the entire ring road will open to traffic.
