Waterworks adopts anti-pollution technique
21/5/2003 15:08
The Shanghai Waterworks Minhang Company yesterday launched an anti-water
pollution project that will reduce wastewater discharged into the Huangpu River
by 50 tons per day.
While supplying enterprises and households in the
city with about five million tons of tap water daily, tap water companies in
Shanghai discharge 100,000 tons of water heavily polluted during production.
Previously the polluted water was discharged directly into rivers without
filtering out mud and sand.
The Minhang company started working on the
anti-pollution project in May 2002. Mud and sand is separated from the water
with centrifugal force and a dehydration technique. After processing, the water
meets the national standard for discharge into rivers. The mud and sand
separated out will be used to make bricks, concrete, cement and organic
fertilizer.
Presently, the Minhang waterworks produces 600,000 tons of
tap water everyday. The anti-pollution mechanism separates out 50 tons of mud
and sand during production.
By 2005, all the 12 waterworks in Shanghai's
downtown will adopt this technique in tap water production. It will reduce
polluted water by 100,000 tons and mud discharged into rivers by 1,800 tons
everyday.
