Pudong International Airport will be expanded during a second phase of
construction, for which preparation is now underway, the Shanghai Evening News
reported yesterday.
The airport authority is currently reviewing its
overall plan for the airport and will submit it to the Civil Aviation
Administration of China and Shanghai municipal government for approval by year's
end.
Preparatory projects in the second phase have already begun,
including a 3,800-meter long, 60-meter wide runway, the Shanghai Evening News
report said. Main construction work on the runway is expected to be finished in
2004. The runway will be put into service in 2006, and will be able to
accommodate the world's largest passenger jet, the Airbus A380.
The
second phase plan also includes a new terminal, which will be completed and put
into operation in 2007.
