Deep-water port construction in progress
11/7/2003 15:10

Shanghai's international shipping center is well under construction on two islands, Dayangshan and Xiaoyangshan, off the city's southeast coast in Hangzhou Bay, today's Wen Hui Bao daily reported.
An investment of 3.45 billion yuan (US$17 million) has been put in the first phase construction of the 14.3-billion-yuan Yangshan Deep Water Port project, which started constriction last June.
After completion, the first phase project is expected to open service by the end of 2005.
After a year's construction, the first bridge has advanced 3.6 kilometers with about 1.2 kilometers built over the sea. Workers have also finished half of a man-made lake. However, the construction is expected to advance faster as the bidding for the infrastructure construction will soon start.
The port project includes the construction of a deep-water port, a 31.8-kilometer cross-sea bridge and a new city for 500,000 residents.
At the center of the 90-square-meter Shanghai New Harbor City is a man-made lake. Its 2.4 kilometer diameter makes it larger than Hangzhou's famous West Lake.
Half the land of the city will be reclaimed from the East Sea.
By 2005, the lake will be completed and the inner ring of the city will be ready to host businesses and residents.
The city is designed for the information technology era where people can work at home and very few workers need to go to plans.
No industrial zone has been included the city's plan and only one logistic hub and a free-trade zone will be built to serve the port.
All buildings and facilities are being laid out in three rings. Public service units and business buildings are arranged at the inner ring, while people live in the outer ring. In between is a circle-shaped park, 500 meters in width.
To save energy and protect environment, its public transportation is mainly based on tram and rail transportation.
