Another cross-river bridge plan ok'd
5/8/2003 15:13

Shanghai will build another bridge alongside the existing Fengpu Bridge, which links Minhang and Fengxian districts on the two banks of the Huangpu River, to provide toll-free and fast cross-river transportation, today's Wen Hui Bao reported.
The municipal government makes the decision after approving a proposal put forward by two local members of Shanghai Committee of Chinese People's Political Consultative Conference (CPPCC), the same report said.
Before the approval, Shanghai Municipal Engineering Administration Bureau has conducted a feasibility research into the bridge proposal.
The new bridge will be 18 meters wide and five meters away from the existing Fengpu Bridge, according to the bureau. It will take two year to complete the construction and cost a total investment of 300 million yuan (US$36 million).
Fengpu Bridge, completed in 1995, has been included into the city's A4 expressway network since last year and has become the only cross-river in Shanghai that charges tolls.
Though the local governments have provided subsidies to companies for the extra cost, the tolls have caused extra economic burden on individuals across the river and slowed down the transport through the bridge, according to Wen Hui Bao.
There are about 8,000 people living in Fengxian crossing the bridge everyday to go to work in the development zone of Minhang.
