Shanghai is stepping up its road construction, investing 2.65 billion
yuan (US$320 million) in the first 10 months to build or reconstruct 753
kilometers of roads as well as 77 dilapidated bridges, according to a recent
rural road and endangered bridge reconstruction meeting in the city. By the
end of last year, Shanghai had completed a road network totaling 6,300
kilometers, in which 3,124 kilometers, or nearly half, is in the rural
area. The city plans to build or reconstruct 2,500 kilometers of rural roads
in the following three years from 2003 to 2005.
