Port moves eastward

The Wai Hongqiao passenger dock moves eastward to Huishan dock today to
make way for a new passenger transportation hub on its original site soon to
break ground.
Besides several nonscheduled cruise ships, the Wai
Hongqiao dock handles only two fixed ship courses linking Shanghai with Osaka
and Kobe of Japan currently. The two ships will anchor on Huishan port from now
on. All custom registration and checking procedures are moved to the new port at
the same time.
With old building pulled down, a new passenger
transportation hub will be built on the site in north Bund. The 1.2 billion yuan
project will possibly start by the year-end and be completed in 2007. The new
hub is part of Shanghai's planned international shipping center, a port official
said.
