With the final two ships of earth sprayed onto reclaimed land at
Xiaoyangshan Island off the Hangzhou Bay in East China Sea where a mega deep
water port is under construction, the task of reclaiming 20 million cubic meters
of earth from the sea to from a 1-million-square-meter land was completed
yesterday, seven days ahead of schedule. The reclamation project is an
important part of the first phrase of the Yangshan Deep-water Port construction.
Due to the difficulties in the project, the Shanghai Waterways Bureau, in charge
of the earth-spraying work, began to make exploration two years ago, seeking
suitable source of earth and purchasing the world's most advanced earth-spraying
ships. In order to minimize the native impact the project is likely to have
on environment, the technologists from the Yangshan Tongsheng Port Construction
Co Ltd adopted the earth-spraying method instead of leveling off hilltops.
These earth is gained from the sea, so will not pollute the maritime space,
said an industry analyst.
