City gearing up for return peak

With a great number of out-of-town workers and students returning to
Shanghai after the Spring Festival holiday, 26 trains were added for the local
Metro Line 1 from January 23 to February 3, with more than 90,000 contingency
tickets adopted, the Shanghai Evening Post reported today. In order to ease
the huge passenger flows during the peak return period, the Shanghai Metro
Operation Co Ltd, operator of the city's two subways and one of the two elevated
metro lines, raised the number of trains by 26 for temporary use from January 23
to February 3, with nine additional trains available on February 2, and more
than 90,000 tickets slate for emergency use were adopted during the time period,
with 12,300 tickets on February 3. The city's Metro Line 1, Metro Line 2 and
Pearl Line reported combined daily passengers of 1.08 million from January 29 to
February 3 on average, an increase of 15.3 percent from the daily passenger
volumes during the weeklong Spring Festival holiday. In a bid to offer more
convenience for returning passengers, the Shanghai Railway Station opened its
nearest No.1 entrance 30 minutes in advance, and formed a work team to maintain
good orders inside and outside the railway station.
