Fuxing Tunnel opens to traffic next month

China's first
double-decker tunnel - Fuxing Road East Tunnel - will open to traffic by the end
of next month, with a capacity of 40 percent more than usual tunnels.
The
cross-river tunnel - connecting Fuxing Road East in Puxi with Zhangyang Road in
Pudong, is expected to dramatically reduce traffic jams in the city's downtown
area.
The upper deck of the tunnel, with a height of 2.6 meters, is a dual
carriageway for small vehicles, and the lower deck, 4-meters in height, is a
single carriageway with an additional spare lane slated for larger vehicles.
There are 40 ventilation facilities in the tunnel.
An advanced road
network in the proximity of the tunnel is also designated to ease traffic
congestion.
