Overpass to be demolished

The Tilanqiao Pedestrian Overpass, a signature square-shaped construction in Hongkou District built in the early 1980s, will be demolished by the end of next month as a part of a face-lift of the northern Bund.
Preliminary plans call for the area around the overpass to give way to either a large public park or modern office buildings over the next few years, officials said.
"We will start to dismantle the bridge later this month and the entire project will last for one month," Wang Zhonghai, an official with the construction and management commission of Hongkou District, said yesterday.
He said the overpass will mainly be pulled down at night to avoid disturbing local residents and traffic any more than necessary.
The overpass is located where Daming Road E., Haimen Road and Huoshan Road form an irregular K-shaped intersection.
Currently, there are no pedestrian crossing signals set up on the intersection. Officials said they will install eight pedestrian traffic lights around the intersection once the overpass is removed.
The city government plans to turn a 300-hectare section of the northern Bund - enclosed by Zhoujiazui Road and Haining Road - into four zones including a historic area, a comprehensive business zone, a residential area, and a site for the World Exposition in 2010.
