Preliminary construction of the Pudong railway line began the afternoon of
November 17, and is expected to be completed by the end of next year, announced
a spokesman with the Shanghai Railway Bureau yesterday.
The long-awaited
117-kilometer line, at a total investment of 7.6 billion yuan (US$915 million),
will link the outlying districts of Jinshan, Fengxian, Nanhui, Pudong New Area
and Baoshan District, with its South Ruanhang Station and the north Zhangmiao
Station of the National Railway.
The first-phase of the project is a 42.8
kilometer line that will cost two billion yuan. It will start operation by the
end of next year, when the first-phase construction of the Yangshan Deep-water
Port is also completed, to meet the massive demand for cargo
transportation.
The railway line is primarily aimed at raising the city's
transportation capacity and efficiency on the way to developing it into an
international shipping and aviation center.
