The Yangpu District Construction Committee has confirmed that the only pedestrian overpass in the Tilanqiao area has been closed, the Labor Daily reported today.
The "Tilanqiao" area was named after an old bridge ("Qiao" in Chinese refers to a bridge).
The overpass now being dismantled is located at the intersection of North Daming Rd, Haimen Rd and Huoshan Rd.   After the removal of the handrails, this overpasswill exist in the name only.
"Although this area is named Tilanqiao, this is the only bridge.  Once it is dismantled, Tilanqiao will no longer contain a bridge," said an old citizen living nearby who was expressing his regret.  He has taken a photo of this overpass  as a souvenir.
Li, the section director with Tilanqiao Community Affairs Office, indicated that this overpass has enjoyed a 20-year history.  However, due to years of wear, the need to rebuild the driveways, and development of the North Bund, the overpass was approved for dismantling.
Several overpasses in the Hongkou District are also being considered for dismantling.
