Railway service between Shanghai and Nanjing, the capital city of Shanghai's neighboring Jiangsu Province, will be more frequent and faster starting Wednesday, today's Shanghai Morning Post reported.
Citing sources from the local railway authority, the report said the two latest models of Bombardier trains will be put in service on the route this week, so that during the peak hours between 8.30 am and 9.00 am, there will be service every seven minutes.
With an average speed at 132.7 kilometers per hour and a peak speed at 160 kilometers per hour, the new trains will complete the ride with two hours and 17 minutes, 25 minutes shorter than the existing fastest service on the route by a bullet-train.
The ticket price is 52 yuan (US$6.3) for a normal seat and 79 yuan for a soft-cushion seat, both about 10 percent more than the current charges.
With the added trains and re-adjusted schedules, the railway service has increased passenger capacity by about 6,000 passengers each day, equivalent to more than 150 buses, according to Liu Jianmin, vice director with Shanghai Railways Bureau.
The more frequent and faster service has realized the city's plan to provide bus-service-like railway service between Shanghai and Nanjing in addition to the existing line between Shanghai and Hangzhou, capital of Shanghai's neighboring Zhejiang Province, he added.
