Shanghai South
Railway Station on Metro Line One started its underground operation on December
4; however, the result has increased the traffic jams in Caobao Rd, another
station on the same line, the Oriental Morning Post reported this
morning. Efforts by several volunteers and station workers to keep order with
the over 20 anxious passengers in each waiting area were in vain. Doors could
only close after several beeps due to the over-crowded trains which still
refused the majority of the waiting passengers outside. During peak hours,
Metro Line One from Jingjiang Park Station to Xujiahui is the most crowded
section. The train becomes fullest at Caobao Rd Station as a result of the
overrun in the numbers getting on, explained one spokesman with Shanghai Metro
Operation Co. Ltd. The soon-to-be-started backout construction of the above
ground former South Railway Station might have further side effects on the whole
environment of the station.
