Construction kicked off on the Shanghai Yangtze River Tunnel and Bridge
Project, the so called Shanghai-Chongming Expressway, yesterday on Chongming
Island. The cross-river expressway, which will be 25.5 kilometers long, will
connect Pudong with Chongming Island. The project includes an 8.9-kilometer
tunnel connecting Pudong with Changxing Island and a 10.3-kilometer cable-stayed
bridge between Changxing and Chongming islands. A 6.3-kilometer elevated
highway will also be built on Changxing Island to link the tunnel with the
bridge. The project is the biggest link in the world combining a tunnel with
a bridge. The expressway will have six lanes, designed for speeds of up to 80
kilometers per hour in the tunnel and 100 kilometers per hour on the
bridge. The entire project is estimated to cost 12.3 billion yuan (US$1.48
billion). It is expected to be finished in five years. Chongming Island, the
country's third-largest island, is located at the estuary of the Yangtze River
with a population of around 650,000 and an area of 1,041 square
kilometers. Currently, the only way to get to the island from downtown
Shanghai is by ferry, which takes at least two hours. Once the expressway is
finished, people will be able to drive from Chongming to Pudong in about 30
minutes. The area will develop quickly once the link is completed, Chongming
officials said.
