Gu Jia/Shanghai Daily news

The municipal construction headquarters announced on January 13 that by 2005, Shanghai would become a city possessing both a 15-meter deep-water port and a bi-airstrip airport.
The city's total value of import and export on foreign trade in 2004 increased by 40 percent to US$ 280 billion (2315.6 billion yuan).  Thanks to this huge soar, the throughputs of cargo and containers in local ports exceeded 379 million tons and 14.555 million respectively, up by 19.8 and 29 percent, ranked at the top two and three in the world.  By this November, on completion, the Yangshan Deep-water Port I phase would contribute a yearly throughput of over 2.2 million containers to city's total, expected to be 17 million containers.
The number of flights  in some international hubs possessing over two airstrips nearly doubles that in the local airports.  However, this will be a common sight, one airplane taking off or landing every minute during the peak period, when a second airstrip is put into use in Pudong International Airport this March. Millions have been invested on the construction of some support facilities, including the renovation of the existing waiting hall in Pudong airport, to create a conducive environment for the air traffic.
