Xia Xi'na, a local deputy to the Shanghai People's Congress, submitted his
proposal at the annual plenary meeting for improving the rush hour congestion on
Metro Line One.
Xia wrote that though the opening of ML1 had helped a lot in
smoothing city traffic, passenger capacity was still far from enough, with an
over-saturation of 146 percent during peak periods, especially at such stations
as Xinzhuang, Lianhua Rd and Jinjiang Park.
"It's very dangerous when the
train doors cannot close normally due to the crowding," Xia suggested, "Some
additional carriages might be added to the original trains to increase passenger
capacity."
Wu Yi, deputy director general of the municipal transportation
administration bureau, replied that the local government had taken notice of
this situation years ago when the passenger flow in ML1 began to increase.
And the adding of carriages in ML1 is a main goal for the related departments
this year.
