Cuban cyclist Gonzalez earns gold in Uruguayan Pan American 25km event

Cuban cyclist Yoanka Gonzalez yesterday won the women's speed cycling
25-kilometer track race event at Uruguay's Track and Route Cycling Pan American,
winning the first medal for Cuba in this event. Gonzalez totaled 32 points
and defeated Mexican cyclist Belem Guerrero, who won the silver medal with 27
points at Montevideos Municipal Cycle Track. Meanwhile, Argentine cyclist
Valeria Muller won the bronze medal with 21 points. Gonzalez, world track
champion, won three of the last four sprints to defeat Guerrero, the recent
Venezuela-2007 Pan American champion. Yoanka already has her Beijing-2008
pass ensured, but Guerrero is still seeking hers. Uruguay's Track and Route
Cycling Pan American event started on May 4 and concludes on May 11 with the
participation of 25 countries and some 250 athletes.
