Men are more interested in football, baseball and boxing while women are
more fond of watching gymnastics and swimming, a VISA survey on Olympic sports
said yesterday.
Of the 4,556 people from the Asia Pacific region who were asked which Olympic
sport most interested them, the latest VISA survey found that, swimming,
football and gymnastics were the clear overall winners, but there were apparent
divergence between men and women.
Fifty-three percent men said they were interested in football, a 19
percentage point more than women's 34 percent.
There are also big interest gaps between men and women in baseball, boxing,
gymnastics and swimming -- particularly synchronized swimming.
A 13 percentage point more women said they like to watch synchronized
swimming event during the Olympics, and a nine percentage points more women want
to watch gymnastics.
The survey also showed that there is generational disparity over which sports
to watch. People over 45 are twice as interested in athletics and baseball as
those aged 18-24, while younger people are far more likely to watch hockey,
boxing and tennis.
