Cesar Cielo, back from making Olympic history in Beijing, yesterday gave
swimming fans more to cheer about at the Jose Finkel Trophy swim meet in Sao
Paulo.
Along with his teammates Nicholas Santos, Bruno Fratus and Fernando Silva,
the Pinheiros team won the 4x50 meters freestyle event, setting a world best
time of one minute 27.22 seconds.
Despite being tired from all the run around and new found popularity, Cielo
jumped right back in the water. Cielo was the quickest in the pool during his
leg by swimming his leg in 21.09 seconds. Strong in all of their heats leading
up to the final race, the Pinheiros team won the gold medal and demonstrated an
excellent time in the race. However, the event isn't on the Olympic calendar and
the event is not very well recognized.
After Thursday's victory, Cielo claimed that he wasn't swimming at his best.
"Everyone swam well and I gave it my best. I swam for my friends today. They are
the ones who motivated me to get here and participate," said the swimmer.
The Pinheiros team's record broke the previous mark of 1 minute 28.19
seconds. The silver medal went to Unisul, with a time of 1:29.25. Third place
went to Minas, coming in with 1:30.11.
