In the Brazilian sands of Guaruja, the Brazilian duo of Harley and Pedro
Solberg won yesterday against the German team of Brink and Dieckmann.
With their victory at the Guaruja Open, the team has clinched their victory
in the World Circuit of beach volleyball. With three rounds left in the
competition, the Brazilians have already guaranteed their title.
By beating the Germans in a close game 24-26, 21-19 and 15-13, Solberg and
Harley remain atop the world rankings and out of reach of their competitors.
Sunday's victory was the sixth stage that the Brazilians won in the World
Circuit. The first came in Adelaide (Australia) in March. The following were at
Shanghai, Roseto degli Abruzzi, Gstaad, Mallorca, and now Guaruja.
The team's initial goal of the 2008 season was not to win the World Circuit.
Their first ambition was to participate in the Beijing Olympics. However,
Solberg and Harley found themselves in third place amongst the other Brazilian
teams, and out of the Olympics.
After the Olympics, the team decided to dedicate their time and efforts
specifically on wining the World Circuit.
Pedro Solberg is now the youngest player to have ever reached the World
Circuit championship with 22 years old. Before him, it was another Brazilian,
Emanuel, who was champion in 2003 when he was 23 years old.
Harley and Solberg have been a team for only two years. There remain three
more stages before the champions can officially be crowned: Dubai, Manama and
Sanya.
