Atletico Madrid have paid a price for Wednesday's 2-1 win at Getafe with
the news yesterday that they will be without Portuguese winger Simao Sabrosa for
the next three weeks.
Simao had to leave the pitch after 68 minutes of Wednesday's game and tests
carried out in the morning have confirmed that he twisted a knee ligament during
the win which has left Atletico second in the Primera Liga table.
The Atletico website confirmed a second degree twist to Simao's right knee.
The injury means he will miss this weekend's game at home to Sevilla as well
as the trip to play FC Barcelona the following weekend and the Champions League
clash against Olympique Marseilles.
Simao joined striker Diego Forlan on the injury list, while midfielder
Maniche is also doubtful for the weekend after picking up a knock on his back
during the win.
The Wednesday round of league matches left other players struggling with
injuries in Spain.
Osasuna full back Nacho Monreal will be sidelined for at least two months
after damaging his right ankle during his side's 0-0 draw at home to Deportivo
la Coruna.
Meanwhile new Espanyol signing Steve Finnan had an unfortunate first start
for his new club after his arrival from Liverpool. TheRepublic of Ireland
international had to be carried off during hisside's 2-0 defeat away to Sevilla
and the club website believes hehas a torn calf muscle, which if confirmed, will
leave him out of action for around a month.
Whatever the results of the tests that will be carried out in the next 24
hours, he is certain to miss Saturday's city derby against FC Barcelona.
