Spain rounds off 2008 with comfortable win over Chile
20/11/2008 9:33

Spanish national team rounded off their fixtures in what has been an extraordinary 2008 with an easy 3-0 friendly win against Chile last night.

The year has seen Spain crowned European champions and kick off their campaign to qualify for the 2008 World Cup with a 100 percent start.

Goals from David Villa, Fernando Torres and Santi Cazorla gave Spain their triumph to end off a memorable 12 months.

Del Bosque kicked off with what was his possible strongest side on the pitch. David Villa played as a lone forward with Cesc Fabrigas starting in a second striker role, allowing the not fullyfit Fernando Torres to watch the kick off from the substitutes bench.

Iker Casillas played in goal while the back four was made up of Sergio Ramos, Joan Capdevila, Carles Puyol and Raul Albiol.

Cheered on by a full stand of 19,000 fans in Villarreal's El Madrigal Stadium, Spain took the game to their visitors and controlled most of the possession, while also doing most of the attacking.

Villa, Xabi Alonso and Albert Riera all had shots, but were unable to trouble Chile keeper Claudio Bravo.

That changed after 36 minutes when Rodrigo Tello was adjudged to have fouled Riera in the Chile area and David Villa stepped forward to score from the spot.

It was the striker's 24th goal in 41 appearances for his country and takes him past the mark of Alfredo Di Stefano.

Del Bosque made three changes at half time, bringing on Pepe Reina for Casillas, replacing Albiol with Valenciateam-mate Carlos Marchena and Cazorla for Marcos Senna.

Twelve minutes later he decided to bring Torres into the game and when Alvaro Arbeloa stepped in for Sergio Ramos, there were no fewer than five Liverpool players on the pitch for Spain.

Having so many companions from the Premier League alongside him must have inspired Torres as he netted Spain's second of the night.

The striker did all of the work himself, before finishing with a left foot shot from just inside the area.

It was his first goal in five international games, the last one being the goal that gave Spain their triumph in the 2008 European Championships back in June.

Del Bosque then handed an international debut to Athletic Club Bilbao striker Fernando Llorente, but it was Villarreal's Cazorla who delighted the home fans with the third of the night, scoring from a Torres pass.
