After yet another violent weekend between factions of fan groups in the
south of Brazil, the Military Brigade of Rio Grande do Sul took radical measures
yesterday.
The Military Brigade handed in an official document to the Public Ministry
demanding the "extinction" of organized fan groups, hoping to eliminate violence
within soccer stadiums.
Last weekend, in Rio Grande do Sul, a fight among fans left two people with
bullet wounds. In Gremio's 2-1 victory over Coritiba, factions fought in the
Olimpico stadium, leaving many injured and two in critical condition.
"My hope is to eradicate the fans groups. I don't see how they help soccer in
our state. We now have to wait to see what the Public Ministry sees best for the
country. We hope for peace in our stadiums," explained the commander of the
Military Brigade, Paulo Mendez.
