Brazilian soccer players Thiago Silva, Alex and Nilmar were announced
yesterday to be three of the nominees for the 2008 title of "King of the
Americas."
The award is issued by the Uruguayan newspaper, El Pais. The nominations were
made from journalists from all over the American continent.
Both Alex and Nilmar played for the winner of this year's American Cup,
Internacional. Thiago Silva played for Fluminense, but recently closed a deal
sending him to Milan. Thiago Silva said that just being nominated for the award
is a sign that he played well for his team.
"After dozens of games and practice that we had all year long, it is nice to
hear that I am being recognized for my hard work and could be named best player
in the continent," said Silver.
"With this boost in confidence, I will head to my new club in Europe, ready
to fight for a position in the starting lineup."
Other than the Brazilian players, some of the favorites from other countries
include Riquelme and Veron, both of Argentina, Ecuadorian goalkeeper from LDU,
Jose Francisco Cevallos, who helped his team to will the Libertadores Cup as
well as come in second in this year's World Club Championship.
The winner of this year's award will be announced on December
31.
