Alexi Lalas, one of America's highest-profile soccer players, was hired as president and general manager of the MetroStars in Major League Soccer on Monday, according to an Associated Press report.
The 35-year-old Lalas has been the general manager of the San Jose Earthquakes for the past 1 1/2 years, earning praise for improving the team's financial fortunes.
He returns to New Jersey, where he played in 1998, one of his four MLS teams in seven seasons.
Lalas scored nine goals in 96 games for the United States, including helping it to the second round of the 1994 World Cup, where he earned honorable mention to the tournament's All-Star team.
