World Cup hero Lalas named as MetroStars chief

Alexi Lalas, one of America's highest-profile soccer players, was hired as
president and general manager of the MetroStars in Major League Soccer on
Monday, according to an Associated Press report. The 35-year-old Lalas has
been the general manager of the San Jose Earthquakes for the past 1 1/2 years,
earning praise for improving the team's financial fortunes. He returns to New
Jersey, where he played in 1998, one of his four MLS teams in seven
seasons. Lalas scored nine goals in 96 games for the United States, including
helping it to the second round of the 1994 World Cup, where he earned honorable
mention to the tournament's All-Star team.
