Madrid to look for Olympic Games in 2016 or 2020
8/7/2005 11:44

Madrid will keep on struggling until it becomes an Olympic city, said Thursday Regional President Esperanza Aguirre on her return from Singapore after participating in the 117th session of the International Olympic Committee (IOC).
"We will consider this defeat as a sports stimulus" to get the highest number of gold medals in Beijing 2008 and in London 2012, said Aguirre during a press conference of the Council of Government, taking place at the Madrid Community.
Madrid ended third in the voting to host the 2012 Olympics, behind Paris and London, a situation "which has to make us reflect and meditate on the current situation of Spain in the international standing," said the president of the Madrid Community.
Aguirre reminded that the Spanish capital was the third most voted city in the second IOC round, yet in the third it did not receive any of the votes granted to New York in the previous one.
Esperanza Aguirre considered the work done by Prime Minister Tony Blair was decisive for the election of London, although she insisted Madrid will be "Olympic" by 2016 or 2020.
