Player apologizes to owner of Boca Juniors soccer club
26/7/2005 12:07

Argentine striker Marcelo Delgado, of Boca Juniors, Monday apologized to club President Mauricio Macri, for his remarks after he was prevented from accepting an important job offer in Japan.
"I let myself be carried away by anger when I saw a very important economic possibility slipped through my hands," said the striker after having termed Macri as "proud" and promoting "personal business" with Boca Juniors.
After learning the remarks made by the player in South Korea during a pre-season tour, Macri said Sunday to the Argentine media that Delgado would be brought back to Argentina.
"It is difficult to understand his position. When he arrived in Boca (six months ago after his participation in Mexico's Cruz Azul) he was content. We understand he was offered a good bidding (one and a US$0.5 million a year in Japan) but his attitude is irresponsible," said Macri.
The present coach of Boca, Alfio Basile, considers Delgado a key figure for the Buenos Aires club to recover from a bad previous season.
Delgado, 32, told the local radio of Buenos Aires, while at the South Korean capital of Seoul that his remarks came when he was "hot headed" after "I spoke to Macri and he did not give me options."
Former Boca vice president Roberto Digon said Macri asked Delgado for "a 500,000-dollar commission for his transfer to the Japanese club" or else the player would be sent to the bench for the remainder of his contract which is over in 2007.
Another ex-vice president of Boca, Juan Carlos Crespi, who was replaced by ex-soccer star Diego Maradona, said that in that club "there is not a treatment based on understanding with the players" and that they are accused of being "traitors" when they decide to leave the club.
