Zimbabwe beat Rwanda 3-1 in Africa Nations Cup qualifier

Zimbabwe's Warriors football team beat Rwanda 3-1 in a qualifier for the
2006 Nations Cup finals at the National Sports Stadium in Harare on
Sunday. The Warriors, ranked ninth on the continent, consolidated their top
place at the standings for their second straight Nations Cup finals. The
victory also kept alive the Warriors' slim hopes of writing one of the greatest
fairy-tale success stories in the 75-year history of the World Cup by qualifying
for the global finals in Germany next year. The 3-1 victory took their tally
in Group Four to 15 points and enough for them to shake off the challenge of
Gabon who crashed to a 3-0 defeat in Luanda at the hands of leaders Angola on
Sunday. The Warriors went on a lap of honor along the athletics track of the
stadium after the final whistle as some fans broke through the tight security
cordon to join their heroes in the post-match celebrations on the field. With
the Warriors having beaten Eritrea 2-0, such a position would have taken them to
their maiden Nations Cup finals. The Warriors will need to win in Nigeria in
their final match of the campaign and hope that other results go their way for
their World Cup journey.
