The Zambia National Broadcasting Corporation (ZNBC) is seeking 3.6 billion
kwacha (US$1 million) to facilitate the beaming of the 2006 MTN Africa Cup to be
held in Egypt this month, according to Times of Zambia. ZNBC director of
program Ben Kangwa was quoted as saying in Lusaka Sunday that the state-run TV
corporation has never paid such an amount of money to broadcast live any soccer
championship, adding that the last Africa Cup of Nations cost it 150 million
kwacha (about US$40,000 at current rate). "This, in our view, would be a
colossal amount of money that we could every pay to broadcast live any soccer
championship, he said in a statement. He said ZNBC will try by all means to
do the best it can in this regard. Kangwa said the corporation is faced with
a tough challenge as is continued to negotiate the price while at the same time
exploring other avenues of meeting the cost. The director appealed to the
business community, embassies and all soccer living individuals to help ZNBC
raise the amount of money.
