Barcelona to host EuroGames 2008

Spanish city Barcelona will host the 2008 European Gay and Lesbian Games,
which is expected to draw around 5,000 athletes, the European Gay and Lesbian
Sporting Federation said in a statement yesterday. The Federation chose
Barcelona, capital of the Spanish region Catalonia, at its annual general
assembly held in Budapest on Sunday. Eugeni Villalbi, responsible for the gay
and lesbian affairs at the Catalan president's office, had campaigned actively
for Barcelona to host the Games. The competition will take place between July
24 and July 27, 2008. It will include events like football, basketball,
swimming, bowling, hockey, volleyball and petanque. It was first held in the
Hague in 1992 and again in 1993, before landing in Frankfurt in 1995, Berlin in
1996, Paris in 1997, Zurich in 2000, Hannover in 2001, Copenhagen in 2003,
Munich in 2004 and Utrecht in 2005.
