Brazilian soccer moves US$330 million a year, making it the largest
soccer market in the Americas, according to a study by United States consultant
Delloite published yesterday, using 2005 data published by the news agency
G1. The bulk of the cash is concentrated in the hands of major clubs,
especially those in Sao Paulo -- Sao Paulo, Corinthians y Santos -- and in the
hands of major stars, like the player Robinho, who was transferred from
Brazilian team Santos to Spanish team Real Madrid. Brazil earned around
US$100 million a year by transferring players to the European market, with
Robinho's transfer accounting for 30 million of this total. Ticket sales
represnts only 23 million reales (US$10.9 million) or seven percent of the total
earned. The study says that the number of fans attending games has been
falling, from around 16,000 per match on average in 1970 to 12,000 per match in
2005. Television rights were worth US$66 million in 2005, with the biggest clubs
earning the most. Sponsors earned the clubs around US$46 million, with
Palmeiras, Gremio de Porto Alegre and Sao Paulo each earning US$five
million. Brazil is the biggest soccer market in Latin America, with Argnetina
in second place with a market size of US$160 million a year, half of which comes
from player transfers.
