Vietnam's male table tennis player Doan Kien Quoc, ranking the 265th in
the world, has secured a place at Beijing 2008 Olympic Games, according to the
Vietnam Table Tennis Federation today. Quoc grabbed the men's title at the
South East Asia Olympic Qualification Tournament concluding on Feb. 3 in
Singapore, the association said, noting that he beat Thai player Phakpoom
Sanguansin 4-2 in the final match. Vietnam will win another table-tennis
berth if male player Nguyen Nam Hai, ranking the 342nd in the world, advances
into Top Seven at an Asian Olympic qualification tournament slated for March in
China's Hong Kong, said the association. Besides Quoc, Vietnam has had three
other athletes, all taekwondo fighters -- Nguyen Van Hung, Hoang Ha Giang and
Nguyen Hoai Thu -- who have officially secured places at the global sports event
slated for August in Beijing. Vietnam bagged home the first-ever Olympic
medal with 26-year-old woman athlete Tran Hieu Ngan taking a taekwondo silver
medal at Sydney Olympic Games 2000.
