Coach-motorbike collision kills 4 in Vietnam

An overloaded coach crashed into a motorbike carrying five local young men
in Vietnam's central highlands Gia Lai province, killing four of the youths and
injuring the remainder, according to local newspaper Young People today. The
accident happened Chu Pah district on Feb. 17, killing three youths aged 18 and
19 on the spot. An 18-year-old man died in hospital, and a 23-year-old man got
seriously injured. The local driver of the overloaded coach named Nguyen Phi
Cuong has been detained for investigation. The accident occurred when the
coach was en route from central highlands Kon Tum province to Gia Lai. The five
youths on the motorbike did not wear helmets, the newspaper said. Last year,
there were a total of 14,624 traffic accidents, which killed 13,150 people and
injured 10,546 others, in Vietnam, according to the country's Road and Railway
Police Department. The respective figures in 2006 were 14,701, 12,739 and
9,806.
