24/4/2008 17:08

German soccer powerhouse FC Schalke 04 yesterday announced Dutchman Fred Rutten as their new head coach.
The Dutchman will take over from next season and has put pen to paper on a two-year contract until June 30, 2010.
The 45-year-old currently coaches Dutch club FC Twente. Under the guidance of Rutten, the Dutch club have finished fourth in the top Dutch league Eredivisie and reached the playoffs for a place in the Champions League next season.
Rutten has played 235 top flight games for Twente and won one cap for the Netherlands before a hip injury ended his career in 1992.
He won the Dutch Cup with Twente in 2001 before joining PSV. After coordinating the youth teams for one year Rutten became Guus Hiddink's assistant coach.
In 2006 he returned to Twente as coach and technical director.
Earlier on April 13, Schalke 04 fired head coach Mirko Slomka as the team saw repeated failures in both domestic and international matches.
Two Schalke legends Mike Buskens and Youri Mulder took charge for the remaining Bundesliga games of this season.
