Duisburg down, Cottbus safe
11/5/2008 11:42

German soccer club MSV Duisburg will be relegated from the Bundesliga for the sixth time after they lost 3-2 against new champions Bayern Munich yesterday.

Energie Cottbus, who have long suffered the danger of relegation this year, have secured their place at Bundesliga next season as they beat Hamburg 2-0 at the second-last round of Bundesliga on Saturday.

With 29 points in total, Duisburg joined Rostock to relegate as Duisburg are 4 points less than Bielefeld, who are listed the fourth from the bottom.

Andreas Ottl and Lukas Podolski scored for Bayern early on, Mihai Tararache and Markus Daun gave MSV hope, but it wasn't enough to prevent the tenth home defeat of the season.

Bayern have conceded 20 goals now and could still surpass Werder Bremen's record from the 1987/88 season which stood at 22 goals against.

Cottbus, however, boasting 36 points, are 5 points more than Nuremburg, who are listed the third from the bottom after they lost to Hertha BSC 1-0 on Saturday.

Thanks to scores by Stiven Rivic in the 29th minute and Dennis Sorensen in the 83rd minute, Cottbus celebrated a well-fought 2-0 win against Hamburger SV, ensuring that they cannot slip into relegation after the second to last match day.

The final club that is to drop out of Bundesliga would be either Bielefeld or Nuremburg. The last round of Bundesliga on May17 will decide the fate of the two club.
