Two cyclists were killed and two others injured when they were hit by a
car during a cross-Canada charity ride over the weekend, police said
yesterday. The cyclists were heading east on Sunday on the Trans-Canada
highway west of Winnipeg, capital of Manitoba province, when they were struck
from behind by a Honda Civic driven by a 27-year-old man, the Royal Canadian
Mounted Police said. Daniel Hurtubise, 50, from Quebec, and his 45-year male
friend from British Columbia were killed instantly. Hurtubise's 16-year-old
daughter, Sonia, and 19-year-old son, Alex, were also struck. They were taken to
hospital with non-life threatening injuries. The cyclists, who left Vancouver
on June 14, were on the "Ride of a Lifetime" raising funds for people suffering
from Type 1 Diabetes. They planned to cycle to St. John's, capital city of
Newfoundland in the eastern end of Canada. Police are still investigating the
accident. They say alcohol is not considered a factor.
