Rio's Maracana stadium was the stage of an exciting match last night, when
local teams Fluminense and Vasco tied 3-3 in the Brazilian soccer league 14th
season. After leading 3-1, Vasco allowed Fluminense to recover and scrape a
tie in a game where the old rivalry between the two teams was always
present. Fluminense had a better start with two chances in the beginning of
the match, but it was Vasco's Leandro Amaral who wasted what is likely to be
labeled the best chance of the season, at the 14th minute. Amaral received a
perfect cross from Wagner Diniz, and missed the shoot, leaving Vasco's fans
dumbfounded. At the 18th minute, Vasco found its way to Fluminense's goal,
when captain Edmundo received a left-side pass from Madson and scored his fifth
goal in the tournament. Both teams missed good chances in the first half.
Only at the eighth minute of the second half Leandro Amaral redeemed himself and
scored Vasco's second goal. Fluminense scored a minute later, when Washington
received a pass from Dodo. Vasco's third goal came when Marcus Vinicius led a
quick counter-attack and passed the ball to Morais, who rolled it to captain
Edmundo. At the 29th minute, Fluminense was awarded a penalty and Washington
scored, giving hope to his team. Tarta equalized six minutes later, after
receiving from Somalia and fooling Vasco's defenders. The tie made Vasco fall
one position in the ranking. The team is now in the 13th place, with 16 points.
With 13 points, Fluminense was in 18th place, and risks being delegated to the
second division. In the Brazilian league, the last four teams are delegated
to the second division, while the first four qualify to the following year's
Libertadores Cup. The teams that end 5th-12th place qualify to the following
year's South American Cup.
