Rio's Botafogo beat Minas Gerais state's Atletico Mineiro 4-0 in the Joao
Havelange stadium last night, climbing three positions in the Brazilian
League. Botafogo is now in the 10th position with 18 points, and is among the
teams that qualify for the South American Cup. Atletico fell one position and is
now the 17th, with 15 points, in the delegation zone. In the 25th second of
the match, Botafogo was awarded a penalty shot, and captain Lucio Flavio did not
waste the chance to score. It was Lucio Flavio's 14th penalty goal in the
season. Atletico tried to score many times, mostly in counter-attacks, but
the team lost steam after Cesar Prates was sent out for pulling Botafogo's
Wellington Paulista's shirt, in the second half. Botafogo took full advantage
of having an extra player, and also benefited from Atletico's mistakes. In the
24th minute, Atletico's defenders made a mistake that allowed Botafogo's
Triguinho to score his team's second goal. The third goal came in the 42nd
minute with Carlos Alberto, after Atletico had another player sent out. Two
minutes later, Gil received a pass and completed Botafogo's landslide
victory. In the Beira Rio stadium, Rio Grande do Sul's Internacional beat Sao
Paulo by 2-0. Striker Nilmar scored the two goals and was the best player in the
match. The result left Internacional in the sixth place in the tournament,
while Sao Paulo maintained its fifth place. Both teams are among those which
qualify to the South American Cup. Sao Paulo had a goal wrongfully annulled
by the referee in the 25th minute. Internacional scored its first goal ten
minutes later, when Angelo crossed and Sao Paulo's defender Juninho failed to
stop striker Nilmar from fooling goalkeeper Rogerio Ceni. In the second half,
Internacional's Nilmar scored again, even though Sao Paulo attacked more. The
striker received a quick pass from Andrezinho, and shot from the right side to
complete the Rio Grande do Sul's team's victory.
