Eyeing an Olympic gold, Nigeria's U-23 national team, also known as the
Olympic Eagles, thrashed a South Korean Premier League club 4-1 in warm-up,
local media reported today. The match, one of the games that coach Samson
Siasia has lined up to fine-tune his armoury for the Beijing Games, saw the
Eagles scoring through Victor Obinna Nsofor, Bernard Okorowanta, Victor Anichebe
and Solomon Okoronkwo. The victory came just three days before the team takes
the short flight into Beijing, onwards to Tianjin, where it plays in the group
phase of the Games at the quadrennial showpiece. Siasia saw the game as a
morale booster for his team. The Olympic Eagles will fly into China at the
weekend to attune with the environment ahead of their matches against the United
States, Netherlands and Japan in Group B. The Nigerian women's team, Falcons,
is in Shenyang, a co-host city to northeast of Beijing. The girls earned their
own big morale booster with a 2-2 draw with hosts China over the
weekend. Meanwhile, Nigerian Football Federation President Sani Lulu
Abdullahi has reiterated the confidence in the two teams taking part in the
Olympic football tournaments. He said: "We have faith in the ability of the
men's team under Samson Siasia and the women's team under Jossy Lad. "Our
players are good enough to dig their feet into the ground against any opponents
in the world, and we expect pleasant outcomes in China," he said.
