French president to attend opening ceremony of Beijing Olympics

French President Nicolas Sarkozy on Friday will arrive in Beijing for a brief visit, during which he will be present at the opening ceremony of Beijing Olympics, a statement released by French presidential office has said.

According to the schedule, Sarkozy will go to the Olympic Village where he will visit French athletes and sports officials.

On Friday afternoon, he will meet with Chinese President Hu Jintao and Premier Wen Jiabao.

Sarkozy will arrive at the Olympic Stadium for the opening ceremony at around 20:00 local time (1200 GMT).

After attending the ceremony, the French president will return to southern France where he will continue his vacation, according to the office.

Sarkozy will be accompanied by Sports Minister Roselyne Bachelot, Speaker of the National Assembly Bernard Accoyer, former Prime Minister Jean-Pierre Raffarin and some world champions.
