Brazilian President Luis Inacio Lula da Silva criticized the Brazilian
national football team for a draw against Bolivia without goals, and said it was
one of the worst performances, local daily "O Globo" reported yesterday.
"Unfortunately Brazil has not the best football in the world," Lula said as
quoted by the "O Globo" about the games for the South America World Cup
qualifying tournament.
Lula made on Saturday these declarations during a public event with former
World Cup winners including Jairzinho, Alarildo, Altair and the presidents of
the Fulminense and Vasco da Gama soccer club, in the city of Duque de Caxias,
near Rio de Janeiro.
Lula also talked about the low level of the local clubs, and he said that the
best national players play in Italy, Spain and England.
Lula regretted that the country had become "one of the great exporters of
players in the planet".
Lula had hailed Argentine player Lionel Messi 10 days before, and according
to many local sports analysts, Lula's declaration worked because Brazilian team
defeated Chile and were able to go from the sixth place to the second at the
classification board.
However, Brazil played in shameful way against Bolivia (which was at the last
place of the board) and finished the patient of the fans and local press on the
coach, Carlos Caetano Bledorn Verri, who probably could lose his charge in the
coming days.
