Defending champions PSV Eindhoven returned to the top of the Dutch premier
league (Eredivisie) table yesterday, with a narrow 1-0 home victory over
Volendam.
PSV dominated the match against Volendam, but squandered many chances to open
the account in the early stages. At the 73rd minute, 18-year-old Belgian Stijn
Wuytens, a midfielder who is playing in his first season with the club, broke
the deadlock witha brilliant header from close range.
PSV could have made it 2-0 in injury time but striker Danny Koevermans failed
to convert Nordin Amrabat's cross as his header went into the arms of Volendam
goalkeeper Jeroen Verhoeven.
With the victory, PSV improved their record to 3 wins against 1loss, climbing
back to the top of the league with a better goal difference than NAC Breda,
which achieved a convincing 4-2 victory against visitors Heerenveen, which had
been unbeaten in its first three matches of the new season.
In other round 4 actions, Twente routed visitors De Graafschap 3-0, while AZ
Alkmaar comfortably beat hosts Willem II 5-2 thanks to a hatrick from Mounir El
Hamdaoui.
Groningen, leaders after the first three matches, are scheduled to play their
match on Sunday at home against Feyenoord.
