Malaysia set to crack down on sports corruption

The match-fixing and bribery are beginning to once again infiltrate soccer
and other sports in Malaysia, according to the chief of the National Sports
Council. NSC director general Zolkples Embong warned that serious steps must
be taken at once to stamp it out before it spread further. "It's our great
concern that bribery has come back to haunt football and if serious steps are
not taken quickly, it could be as bad as the 1994-95 scandal," Zolkples said as
he launched an Anti-Corruption seminar. In the 1994-95 affair, dozens of
players were banished to remote districts followed by life bans. Zolkples
recommended the FAM form a committee to handle matters concerning bribery,
adding it should also investigate factors leading to players accepting bribes to
fix matches.
