Vasco pushes rival to the depths of table

With their cross town rivalry being played at the Maracana stadium yesterday, the Vasco soccer team got the best out of Fluminense.
With a score of 1-0, Vasco has gained some breathing room and placed their rival in danger of being sent into the second division of the Brasileiro Championship.
Vasco now has 34 points and stands two positions out of place. Fluminense also has 34 points, but stands behind Vasco due to number of victories. The last place team is Ipatinga with 31 points. The team to finish last place in the Brasileiro Championship suffers the consequence of being sent into the second division for the 2009 season.
The game's only goal came in the 27th minute of the second half. Madson dribbled down the field and crossed the ball toward the front of the Fluminense goal.
Vasco's Alex Teixeira jumped in the air along with his defender and the ball popped lose. Wagner Diniz took advantage of the loose ball and blasted it past Fluminense's goalie, Fernando Henrique.
In next week's action, Vasco will host Santos at the Sao Januario stadium. Fluminense will have the tough task of traveling to Minas Gerais to face Cruzeiro yesterday in the 34th round of the tournament.
