Palmeiras beats Santos in last minutes of game

In the heated rivalry between the Brazilian soccer teams of Palmeiras and Santos, the home team of Santos was defeated in the last minutes of play yesterday.
With a score of 2-1, Palmeiras pulled off an important victory in the 33rd round of play in the Brasileiro Championship.
With only five rounds left, Palmeiras now has 61 points and remains in the hunt of this year's title. The Santos club remains with 40 points and out of contention to win the title or qualify to play in the 2009 Libertadores Cup. They are, however, out of danger of being sent down to the second division as a result of placing last in this year's tournament.
In the first minute of play, the star of the Palmeiras team, Kleber, received the ball while wide open. The player dominated the ball, set up his shot, and fired between the legs of the goalkeeper to score the team's first goal.
Santos' goal came in the first minute of the second half. Kleber Pereira out jumped the defense and headed the ball off a corner kick towards the goal. The goalie was able to make contact with the ball, but he ended up deflecting the ball into the net. The game winning goal by Palmeiras came in stoppage time. Leo Lima kicked in the goal off a crossed ball from Leandro, putting his team up in the last minutes of play.
Palmeiras, depending on the other results of yesterday's matches, currently stands in first place of the Brasileiro Championship. They, along with the teams of Sao Paulo, Gremio, Flamengo and Cruzeiro are in the hunt to win this year's championship. The top four placed teams automatically qualify to play in the 2009 Libertadores Cup.
